The process of testing contacts with potential for contamination is continuing. MedLife announces the launching of its own COVID 19, Real Time PCR testing laboratory

We provide new information regarding the COVID 19 case, announced on Tuesday, March 23, in MedLife Maternity in Bucharest:

After detecting the first positive case in Grivita Maternity, we immediately started an extended testing process, independently run, based on the safest method of processing, practiced worldwide, Real Time PCR. Thus, we started the testing of all staff who worked in MedLife Maternity during the past 10 days and who could come in contact with the infected patient, from the doctors and nurses who took care and investigated the mother and her newborn, to all other nursing and auxiliary staff. Also, the mothers, two fathers and the 15 newborns present in the maternity at the time the positive case was confirmed, were tested. For the safety of patients and staff, no less than 93 persons were tested in total.

Of all the people already tested, one person tested positive for COVID 19. The test belongs to a nurse in the obstetrics and gynecology department, being one of the nurses who cared for the positive patient during the hospitalization. Our colleague self-isolated immediately after the patient was confirmed positive for COVID 19, namely on March 23. Until the Department of Public Health decision is communicated, we will proceed with the urgent testing of our colleague's family members and all her contacts. We will also resume testing of all 92 people with negative results to keep them under surveillance. We also test in real time any contact we identify with potential for contamination. If, however, in the following tests a result will prove positive, we will test their relatives until we completely close the circle and the potential risks of infection from our maternity. We will support our patients and colleagues thoroughly.

The activity of Life Memorial Hospital and its maternity is still suspended, an extensive process of disinfection and sterilization is ongoing.

At the same time, we assure patients that all other MedLife medical units in Bucharest and in the country operate within normal conditions and, in the event of a medical emergency, we have the capacity and resources to come to their support, in complete safety. In addition, to keep safe staff and patients arriving for emergencies in other MedLife units, we have expanded the testing process for all doctors and nurses who are directly involved in the triage process upon entering our units.

In this way, we announce that, after considerable efforts of reconstruction and equipping, we have set up our own laboratory, Real Time PCR, in order to detect the infection with COVID-19 (coronavirus). The new laboratory operates under conditions of maximum safety and at the standards imposed by the World Health Organization. The laboratory has processing capacity of 300 tests per day, this capacity to be gradually reached. We started testing the staff of all MedLife units that receive vulnerable patients exposed to COVID 19. By Monday, we hope to complete the testing of all the staff who care for oncology patients and provide assistance for chemotherapy treatments in our units in Bucharest, Brasov, Sibiu and Craiova as well as all the staff who provide radiotherapy treatments in our radiotherapy center in Sibiu.

It is essential during this period to support the efforts of the authorities to limit the spread of the disease. We remain at their disposal to provide our resources for the detection of COVID 19 infection.

We will come back with new information depending on the evolution of the situation.
