MEDLIFE: “Since the very first moment we kept in touch with the authorities and implemented all the measures required under this situation"

We present information on the case of a patient diagnosed with COVID 19:

On March 13, 2020, the patient was admitted to MedLife Grivita Maternity for delivery, presenting contractions, without visits to other MedLife units. At the time of hospitalization, the patient did not have any symptoms specific to acute respiratory pathology and has declared, in writing, on her own responsibility, that she did not travel to a risk area and did not interact with any other COVID 19 suspected persons or who came from the yellow or red areas, as are they defined by the National Center for Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases”.

During caesarean surgery, the patient got feverish and was shortly stabilized. In this context, the patient came back to the declaration made, mentioning that she had contact with a person recently returned from Spain. As a result, the medical team contacted the Directorate of Public Health in order to evaluate the case. At that time, the DPH representatives replied to our institution that the patient did not meet the testing criteria. One week after the birth, during which the evolution of the patient was favourable, the patient had a new episode of fever, developing pneumonia. Thus, on March 20, doctors insisted on conducting further investigations, resuming discussions with the DPH for testing the patient for COVID-19.

From the moment of testing, in accordance with the protocols in force and with the procedures transmitted by the Ministry of Health, the required measures were immediately implemented, the patient being isolated. Moreover, the patient was quarantined as opposed to the rest of the patients and medical and auxiliary staff from the maternity, with access only to the attending doctor and nurse which were properly equipped.

Yesterday evening, March 23, the test result for the patient was confirmed positive. The patient, along with the new-born, were transferred to the Institute of Infectious Diseases "Prof. Dr. Matei Bals". They were in good condition, the mother having respiratory symptoms in remission.

We mentioned that during the entire hospitalization period, we communicated the patient's condition to the Directorate of Public Health for them to decide on testing the patient for COVID 19 and to implement the measures that are required according to the clinical picture.

We have started an epidemiological investigation, following that in the shortest time to communicate to the Directorate of Public Health an evaluation of the exposed persons, so that they can start their testing as soon as possible. At this moment, none of the patient's direct contacts during the hospitalization period is symptomatic.

We kindly ask all patients who arrive in a medical unit, public or private, to fully comply with the epidemiological prevention measures imposed by the authorities and to demonstrate full responsibility and transparency in relation to the medical staff. In these critical moments of pandemic, it is essential to be aware of the importance of transmitting correct and complete information to keep medical staff safe and to limit the spread of the virus. Everyone`s security depends on the individual actions of each person.

We will come back with new information depending on the evolution of the situation and the decisions of the public health authorities.
